A natural wine guide to Batumi
How natural wine differs from conventional, where to try it in Batumi and what to order first.
What natural wine is
Natural wine means minimal intervention: wild yeast, hand harvest, no filtration and little to no added sulphur. In the glass it is livelier and less predictable than conventional wine — the taste shifts from sip to sip.
How it differs from conventional
Conventional wine is made with cultured yeast to a stable recipe, filtered and stabilised. Natural wine reflects the year, the place and the winemaker's character. Georgia, with its 8,000-year qvevri tradition, is one of the world capitals of natural winemaking.
Where to start
First time? Start with a white Tsolikouri (fresh and friendly), then a Tsitska pét-nat (fun), then a Rkatsiteli amber (depth). Finish with a Saperavi red.
Where to try it in Batumi
LEVEL pours natural wines from small private winemakers of Kakheti, Imereti and Racha, by the glass and by the bottle. Wine tasting in Batumi starts with a single glass — come by and we'll pour and tell the story.
