Amber & Orange Wine: A Qvevri Guide
What amber (orange) wine is, how it's made in qvevri and why it's Georgia's pride — a short guide.
Amber (orange) wine is what wine geeks come to Georgia for. Here's what it is and how to try it.
What amber is
It's white grapes made like red: the juice ferments with skins and seeds. Hence the amber colour, light tannins and deep flavour — nothing like ordinary white.
Why qvevri matters
Classic amber is aged in qvevri — clay vessels buried in the ground. The method is thousands of years old and on the UNESCO heritage list.
How to drink it
- Slightly warmer than regular white.
- Great with cheese, meat and spiced food.
- Start with one glass at a tasting.
LEVEL has a wide choice of ambers and natural wines from private Georgian winemakers. Not sure where to start? Ask us — we'll help you choose.
